The Sural Nerve
The patient is in prone position with lateral surface of the leg is exposed.
Incision is marked parallel and lateral to Achilles tendon, starting two finger breadths lateral and superior to lateral malleous (marked with circle).
Skin and subcutaneous tissue incised with Achilles tendon visible.
The sural nerve noted at lateral edge of the incision between the retractors.
The sural nerve is encircled with vessel loops.
The lesser saphenous vein travels with the sural nerve and care must be taken not to disturb it.
Complete exposure of the sural nerve and the lesser saphenous vein that travels with it.
The division of the sural nerve into its terminal branches: the calcaneal and dorsal lateral nerve of the foot.
Exposure of sural nerve proximally at the level of knee.
